Dandruff is one of the most common scalp disorders that occurs because of a dry scalp or a skin condition called “seborrheic dermatitis.”

It also shows up because of malassezia (a fungus) overgrowth, which feeds on sebum (natural oil secreted by scalp). The following home remedies can help you control dandruff:

i) Mix 4 tablespoons of coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Gently massage the mix on your scalp with fingertips and leave it on for at least 20 minutes. Wash with water.

Coconut oil has antifungal properties that combat the malassezia effectively.

ii) Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of water. Optional: Add 10 to 12 drops of tea tree oil. Apply the mixture onto scalp and leave it on for a few minutes. Rinse.

Apple cider vinegar is a natural cleanser that cleans clogged pores and restores the skin’s pH balance, which is something that stops the growth of yeast.

iii) Mix a few drops of water in 4-5 tablespoons of baking soda to make a paste. Apply the paste on your scalp and after a few minutes, rinse. Baking soda is a mild exfoliant that sheds dead skin cells and absorbs excess oil. It also balances skin pH and keeps the dandruff-causing fungus at bay.

iv) Scoop 5 to 6 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and rub it on your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse. The antifungal properties of aloe vera fight dandruff and its anti inflammatory properties soothes a dry and itchy scalp.

v) Blend a handful of basil leaves to make a paste. Apply it on your scalp with fingertips and leave it on for about 30 minutes and then rinse. Basil’s antibacterial and antifungal properties keep dandruff at bay.
