Whiteheads are closed comedones (clogged pores) filled with oil, dead skin, and bacteria. They can occur anywhere on your face but they mostly break out on your cheekbone, chin, and nose and are very common among people with oily skin.

Whitehead occurs because of sebum blockage.

Let me explain better: Sebum is oil produced by glands and it is expelled through the skin. When this sebum that is being expelled gets blocked by a plug of oil and dead skin cells, the trapped bacteria within it starts growing underneath the skin.

The result is a whitehead.

How To Get Rid of Whiteheads

Squeezing or popping whiteheads aggravates them and causes scars and marks. Whiteheads can be easily treated at home, and here are a few homemade remedies that should help.

i) Oatmeal Paste: It is a natural exfoliator that helps remove dead skin and dirt. Its coarse grains absorb excess oil and clean the pores.

You need: 2 tablespoons yogurt, 4 tablespoons powdered oatmeal, 1 tablespoon lemon juice.

Method: Mix the ingredients and apply it on your face for 15-20 minutes. Rinse.

ii) Cinnamon Paste: The antimicrobial properties of cinnamon combat acne. Plus, it exfoliates whiteheads and blackheads and stimulates collagen production thereby rejuvenating your skin.

Method: Add warm water to  1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to form a paste. Apply it on your face and scrub gently. Wash face after 15-20 minutes.

iii) Gram Flour Paste: It pulls out debris and excess oils from the skin and cleans your skin from deep within.

Method: Add 2 tablespoons of gram flour in yogurt to make a paste. Add a pinch of turmeric powder to the paste. Mix it well. Apply it on your face and scrub softly. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse.

iv) Sugar Scrub: It works as a great skin exfoliator and leaves skin glowing and rejuvenated.

Method: Mix 1 tablespoon of sugar and honey each.  Massage it on your face in circular motions and wait for few minutes. Wash face.

Skin sheds approximately 30,000- 40,000 skin cells every hour. On an average, you doff about 8 pounds of dead skin in a year.
